Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on poker.
The real advancement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
