Poker has become globally acclaimed as of late, with televised competitions and celebrity poker game events. Its universal appeal, though, stretches back in fact a bit farther than its TV ratings. Over the years numerous variants on the earliest poker game have been developed, including some games that are not really poker anymore. Caribbean stud poker is 1 of these games. Regardless of the name, Caribbean stud poker is most closely related to twenty-one than long-standing poker, in that the players bet against the dealer instead of each other. The winning hands, are the established poker hands. There is no bluffing or different types of bamboozlement. In Caribbean stud poker, you are expected to ante up before the croupier saying "No further wagers." At that point, both you and the dealer and of course all of the other gamblers are given five cards. Once you have looked at your hand and the bank’s 1st card, you need to in turn make a call bet or give up. The call wager’s value is akin to your original wager, which means that the stakes will have doubled. Abandoning means that your ante goes instantly to the bank. After the bet comes the face off. If the house doesn’t have ace/king or greater, your bet is returned, plus an amount equal to the initial bet. If the house does have ace/king or better, you succeed if your hand defeats the casino’s hand. The dealer pays out chips equal to your bet and set odds on your call wager. These expectations are:

  • Equal for a pair or high card
  • 2-1 for 2 pairs
  • three to one for three of a kind
  • 4-1 for a straight
  • five to one for a flush
  • seven to one for a full house
  • 20-1 for a 4 of a kind
  • 50-1 for a straight flush
  • one hundred to one for a royal flush
