Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complex initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an exciting assortment of wagering choices and because you have many individuals trying for the high hand, as well as several shooting for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
