Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked playing numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and don’t win most times. He earned some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on the game.
The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
