Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem difficult initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing array of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, as well as many battling for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
