Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The definite improvement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly compete against one another. Howard had access into several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. He headed to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
