The basic reason for why Stu Ungar changed from gin rummy to poker was that Stu was a little too good at it. So good was he, that no one could equal him. Even the so-called professionals who were supposed to be the greatest at gin rummy were devoured when they competed against Stu. One of these gin rummy professionals was Harry Stein, nicknamed, "Yonkie". Harry suffered such a crushing blow at the hands of Stu Ungar that he allegedly stopped playing it as a pro and never resurfaced at a gin tournament.
Certainly, with a notoriety like that it wasn’t very long before players became shy of gambling against mr. ungar. He could find no games and in his boredom he started doing something no one had attempted prior. He provided starting handicaps to likely competitors with the wish that they might play opposed to him if they thought they had an advantage. He at will played from a bad arrangement and one tale has it that he even played with a consistent absconder. Amid the match, he received advice that the absconder was at it once more but stu assured that he knew of the dishonestly and he would still win, which of course, he did.
The same problem followed Stu Ungar to sin city. He won so often that the casinos began requesting that he not to play on their casinos anymore. The explanation why was that other poker room customers refused to be seated at the table if Stu was seated.
Stu Ungar is recalled more for his abilities in texas holdem poker but he always said that he was considerably better at gin rummy.
He beat Doyle Brunson in the WSOP in Nineteen Eighty and became the youngest world champion. Due to his features that made him appear far younger than he was, he was nicknamed, "The Kid".
